Bauer Family alive and thriving!

Hello All!

New pics are up!  We continue to be overwhelmed by how blessed we are.  We cannot thank God enough!  (Though we're working at it.)

Be sure not to miss the pictures of the boys playing together, their halloween costumes, and Toby's new close-ups!

As for any of you wondering about the Bauer fam's excitement about Obama this election year, please feel free to shoot us any Q's at crossingtosafety@gmail.com.  We welcome them.  We realize we don't fit some aged stereotypes right now.

Big love to you!

Update acheived.

Phew!  We apologize for the delay in posting.  We are content, healthy, and absolutely loving summertime as a family.

To catch you up a bit, Toby is now 10 months old, teething, and a master of the combat crawl.  He's got the mouth of a beaver--two pronounced choppers--but inverted, his are on the bottom.  And he's not afraid to use them.

Liam is 4!  His birthday shots are up now in our album.  He is a delightful boy, a talker, and he keeps getting better.  (though, to be clear, there are days he needs broken like a wild horse)  Liam is loving being a big brother.  And he's slowly figuring out how to be gentle.

Nikki health is tip top.  She recently had a procedure done on her paralyzed vocal chord that enables her to speak for longer periods of time and with more volume.  The only drawback to the procedure is that it doesn't last.  We're considering it's permanent, sibling procedure but that requires some downtime, and hence, some planning.

Jason and Toni completed their home in Tyler, TX!  See their pics at their site, here: http://jtmjbauer.spaces.live.com/

Work is good for Nik and I.  We just returned from a romantic jaunt--thanks to Bob and Meri for watching the boys and Taos!--so we are feeling energized.

We camped in the backyard last night, tent and all.  Liam asked to do it again tonight.  It's fresh out, sunny, and the garden is growing.  Tough to top.

Big love to you!

Photos and a new mega-update are coming soon!  This is just a teaser.
We are doing very well!  We are healthy, content, and thankful.   And unusally tired.  All at once.

How far we've come!  It's remarkable.

Love to you!  The Bauer 4.

Tobias Robert Bauer has arrived!

Our healthy boy came last night at 9:36pm after a long ramp-up.  8lbs. 4oz., 20 inches long.
Nikki is comfortable and recovering well.

He is beautiful.  We are very grateful to God; There were complications but nothing came of them.
More pictures to come!Late Summer 07 156

Summertime has come!

We've been enjoying this summer immensely.  We've posted pictures--peruse away.`
October is coming!  Perpare for the barrage of newborn pictures!
Love,

So we know this photographer...

He shot Liam in our back yard just recently.  Here's what he came up with, we love it.  Liam had a ball, for the first bit anyway:)

What a day.

And the Big news is...

IT'S A BOY!  We're set to receive our second baby boy this Fall.  We are thrilled!

Fantastic, huh?!  The Bauer boys!

Moving forward, steadily.

The most general of updates here.  Nikki is feeling great--a little tired--but healthy.  We will be going in for an ultrasound someday soon.  What a wonder pregnancy is.  It points to the wonder of God, I think.

Liam, you'll see, has been in a wedding and was "tuxed out" for it.  (Congrats Mohrlangs!)  He is a remarkable boy.  We love him so deeply it evades description, which seems to be the way of ultimate things in this life.  We talk on the phone sometimes now, it's really something.  Excuse my lack of detail.

Steve, Matt and Nick it was great to see you this weekend.  Charnie, we are looking forward to being with you soon!

Waiting for spring,
Tyler (on behalf on Nik and Li)

We're Pregnant! (Okay. One of us is.)

Believe it!   Nikki is pregnant!

If you haven't heard it from us yet we hope to tell you soon!  We are expecting!

We are beside ourselves with anticipation and, simultaneously, living-it-up before the real work starts in October.  We've been warned about the slog ahead:)

Love to you all, and thanks with it for yours.

The wonder of it all!

We like to think it's early spring right now.

This winter will look better to us in the rear view mirror.  Too much wet and wind!  Bring on the buds and the birds!

And perhaps the Spring will bring a baby too!   We're trying for a second now that we've got the doc's ok.  (Though, let it be known, that we've been warned that the workload grows exponentially with each child.  So were open to a Summer or Fall pregnancy as well.)  We're keeping plenty busy.

We are both enjoying our work.  And Liam is unspeakably great.  He is two now, (almost three), and acting it at times.  No complaints though, we've been waiting for this stage our whole lives.

Big love to you all!

ps. Funny as it sounds, call our answering machine if you're ever having a tough day; Liam posted a masterpiece on it.  Even if you get us, we'll let you call back and hear it:)

For all Liam knows, Bethlehem is a suburb of Seattle.

Hello All.
Merry Christmas!

Fantastic gift for us all this year!  And it needs no wrapping.

Nik's infection is all cleared up!  She's off antibiotics and feeling very good.
We got a MRI done just the other day to see if we can start trying for another child.  We should receive the results shortly.

We hope your holidays were meaningful and restful!
Best to you!

Into the Holidays!

New pictures have been posted.  Don't miss our vivacious mom!  And the heap of beautiful kids!  We've really had it good this last month.

Nikki is doing well.  We're STILL working at putting an end to that incision infection, but the battle seems in-hand.   Is kid two twinkling in one of our eyes, unnoticed?  Name ideas are being accepted here: tylerb@upc.org (Criteria: must sound nice with "Liam"; must be awesome.)

Good news! Good Fall.

After nearly 5 months of blood thinning therapy it's been revealed that Nikki's blood has no atypical propencity to clot.  We are thrilled, though a little weary (and in her case, bruised!) from the whole ordeal.  No time to sulk though, onward!  To pumpkins!

What's more, we've enjoyed having some time with good friends this Fall.  Some pics are below.

Ryan, we love you, thanks for coming up! (Ryan is the one being hugged by Liam)
John and Elizabeth, good as always
Bob, good to see you in Anaconda.  Hope for more.
Andy, Katherine, Munir, Jamie, Katie, Pedro, Ryan, Jesse- it was a monster of a fried green tomato fest.
Aunt Wendy, we love you!  Get well soon!

And to the family, well...you know.

Great News

The procedure went very well today.  Not only was the infection shallow and a safe distance from openings in Nikki's skull, but the tissue was "granular" indicating that it was still trying to heal.  Phew!

Now it's time for rest, antibiotics, and some good soup.  You'll be glad to know that Liam is doing his part to snuggle her back to health.

Phew!, twice.

Love,

Incision treatment

Just an update RE: the previously mentioned "I and D" procedure.  It has officially been scheduled for this Thursday, September 14th, at 11:30AM.  We are glad to get moving on this so quickly.

Fall reassessment details

The news is complex, but, for the most part, we're pleased by it.  I'll do my best to lay it out clearly.  Here are the facts:

-The remaining tumor has not grown any larger and it will not spread.  It is still, roughly, 1cm by 1cm.   The doctors shared that it would not be uncommon for this type of tumor to remain "relatively dormant" for a year or two, possibly more.  Which is great news.

-You'll remember, the tumor resides in a "safe" part of Nikki's brain, meaning the pressure exerted by the tumor, growing or not, is less likely to cause defects in Nikki's brain function.  (Also, great news.)

-Nikki has an infection under a segment of her incision.  More on this later.

-Ever since the surgery, the doctors have suspected that Nikki has a propensity to develop blood clots.  (Hence the blood thinning regimen she's been slogging through.)   Strangely, whether she's "a clotter" is a question mark at this point.(!)  Apparently, the tests that declared her "a clotter" may have been false positives caused by the stress of surgery and/or medication.  Bottom line, Nikki needs to meet with a hematologist to get reassessed.  The good news is that effective immediately, Nikki is done with blood thinners!

For the four reasons listed above, (along with the fact that Nikki is young, healthy, new mom and brain surgery is inherently risky), the doctors have decided not to schedule a second surgery this fall.

We were upset by this news at first.  We were hoping to be done with this tumor!  But we're relieved and thankful upon reflection.  And that is a remarkable thing.  We may prefer instant fixes, but we are definitely willing to accept a good check-up like this one.  And it leaves the door open (or cracked at the very least) for another Liam or Liametta!

Re: the incision infection (see above), Nikki will probably need to undergo a day-surgery procedure known as an "I and D" to clean and re-suture the affected area.  This will be happening in the next week or so.  Pray for it, if you would--we don't know how serious the infection being treated actually is.  Too serious an infection would have far-reaching implications, none of which would be easy to live with.

Our love to you all!  We feel your support acutely.  And we are thankful to God for it.

Tyler, Nik and Liam Bauer

Reassessment time

Nikki has an MRI scheduled for September 7th, and we meet with our neurologist on the 11th.    We'll be sure to keep you posted.

Late summer update.

Happy Birthday Meri!  You classy 39 year old!

We enjoyed Meri's birthday party and the family's recent trip to our place.  (And were they ever troopers!  We're in the middle of a  few summer projects right now, and the house wasn't exactly "company friendly."  So Ash ended up sleeping at our neighbor's house and we all shared a half-bath, since our main bathroom is torn out.)  Here's to family!

Haircut, emphasis on cut

The good news is that he likes it, contrary to what the indoor photo might lead you to think.  (Ignore the crying.  He had too early a start that day. )  We like it too, though we were surprised by how stark he looked after the shearing.  For the record, a #3 clipper-guard takes off more than you think.

The other shots are of Liam soaking in an evening with a popsicle.  It's the little things in life, even at 2.   That's the truth.

Family update

 We are doing very well.

A big thank you to Judi, Joe, and Betsy for the great summer outfits for Liam!  He is especially fond of his Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch shirts.

It's been a while since I last looked here, so I thought I'd check in--and lo and behold, congratulations are in line!  How exciting to have another little one soon to add to the mix!  You wrote that you'd been warned the work increases exponentially with each child.  And it does, but so does the joy.  I'm happy for you.
